Visa (NYSE: V), a global leader in digital payments, today announced the expansion of its card acceptance services at Makro stores in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. This significant development advances the digital payments ecosystem in Cambodia, offering enhanced payment options for both consumers and tourists.
While bustling street bazaars and family-run stalls remain an integral part of daily life, city dwellers also have the option of shopping in mini-malls, convenience outlets, and modern grocery stores. These newer venues stock a variety of specialty and imported items that are often hard to find in smaller, traditional shops.[1] With the integration of Visa card acceptance at Makro, the shopping experience is further enhanced. Makro’s Phnom Penh locations are conveniently situated in the city centre, while the Siem Reap store offers accessibility just outside the primary tourist zone.

This initiative not only benefits local consumers but also caters to tourists visiting Cambodia, facilitating more ways to pay and contributing to the growth of the tourism sector, which is vital for the country’s economic development.
“In line with the Royal Government of Cambodia’s vision for a digitally connected economy, Visa is committed to driving card acceptance across the Kingdom. This initiative underscores our dedication to uplifting the lives of Cambodians by offering diverse and convenient payment options, and fostering an inclusive financial environment for everyone. Our collaboration with Makro is a testament to our commitment to boosting tourism growth and contributing to a more prosperous and inclusive financial ecosystem for all,” said Lisa Sargent, Country Manager, Visa Cambodia.
“We are thrilled to collaborate with Visa to expand digital payment options for our customers. This collaboration is a crucial step toward providing a seamless shopping experience and aligns with our commitment to offering greater convenience and choice. By embracing digital payments, we are not only enhancing the shopping experience but also supporting the broader development of Cambodia’s digital economy,” said Ms. Anatta Thalangdee, Managing Director of MAKRO Cambodia.
