Typically, more of a couture embellishment that is rarely seen, the return of feathers is more of a micro-trend this season and have served as an exquisite finishing touch to a handful of pièce de résistance items on catwalks from New York to Paris. This micro trend can add a beautiful, soft, quasi ethereal aura to pieces or it can be used to add dramatic luxury to both haute couture gowns and separates alike.
Be it long, dark plumes or short light ones, feathers add a touch of drama to the fall/winter collections that is much needed in the face of so much color and laidback silhouettes.
Feathers aren’t an easy trend to pull off; you want to make sure that you are wearing the feathers and not the other way around. It is important that you choose a piece that you know you will feel confident in and can wear with pride: your footwear should live up to the rest of your outfit, so flip flops or casual flats aren’t really allowed.
Feathered garments don’t necessarily have to be black, they come in several different colors, so keep any other item of clothing in as neutral a palette as possible-the feathers are loud enough and should be the standout piece. If you have difficulty finding embellished clothes, then start by purchasing feathered accessories that will help you get a head start on the trend. Beware of turning a striking trend into a bohemian or hippie look, even if you have feathered earrings, you want to pull them off with great pride and do them justice.
