We can’t always make it to the gym or to the park for our daily workouts, but it’s still important to get moving every day. Rather than making a complicated routine that gives you anxiety just thinking about attempting-sometimes squats after a hard day of work sounds like the last thing you want to do-but easy additions can help keep you toned on days you feel like doing some couch-surfing instead of crunches.
Lunges wild brushing your teeth
Instead of standing in front of the mirror checking out angles for the best selfie while you’re brushing your pearly whites, get lunging. Stand with your feet hip distance apart and step forward with your right leg, making a 90 degree angle with your thigh and torso. Be sure your knee doesn’t bend past your ankle to protect it from injury. Repeat with both legs until you need to rinse.
Counter pushups while cooking
Whether you’re waiting for the water to boil or have a sauce simmering to perfection, take the down time to get your arms in shape. Step about a meter away from the counter, place your hands on the edge about shoulder width apart, and bend your elbows. Press your chest down and back until either your arms or your sauce starts burning.
Taking the stairs
This is the age-old remedy against our progressively lazy culture. When presented with the option to take an elevator or escalator opt for stretching your legs and get a calf workout while climbing steps. Your thighs and glutes will thank you during beach season, so take the time now to get your heart rate up in an easy, everyday way.
Getting up from your desk once an hour
Sitting all day wreaks havoc on your body, especially your back, so make sure you stand up and walk around at least once an hour. If you really want to make an effort, try going for a quick stroll around the block or finding a place to do a few squats. Make sure to have proper form for squats, not letting your knees fall over your toes and keep your chest up.
