Malaysia has set the wheels in motion for a bold regional tourism revival, launching a high-impact Sales Mission to Cambodia from 18 to 22 June 2025. Spearheaded by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC) and executed through Tourism Malaysia, the mission represents a strategic push to reinvigorate travel ties and strengthen Southeast Asia’s shared economic momentum ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026.

In his keynote remarks, the Honourable Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia, YB Dato Sri Tiong King Sing, reaffirmed the country’s deep-rooted commitment to regional unity, economic growth, and cultural exchange, noting, “Today is more than a promotional event, it is a renewed promise to work hand in hand with our Cambodian partners, building a bridge of opportunity for travellers, businesses, and communities across both nations.”
“We are not just promoting destinations,” the Minister emphasized, “we are co-creating experiences that are authentic, accessible, and inclusive and we see Cambodia as a vital part of that journey.”
Cambodia contributed 77,342 visitor arrivals to Malaysia in 2024, with tourism visitor receipts increased significantly from RM164.2 million to RM240.8 million a 47% surge, reflecting growing traveller confidence and higher spending capacity. This signals not only economic resilience, but also a growing appetite among Cambodian travellers for quality experiences, trusted destinations, and culturally enriching journeys.
To mark this growing bilateral cooperation, YB Dato Sri Tiong King Sing also officiated the launch of Cambodia Airways’ inaugural direct flight from Phnom Penh to Penang, scheduled to commence on 26 June 2025, operating twice weekly on Thursdays and Sundays. The route will be serviced by an Airbus A319 aircraft with a capacity of 150 seats, significantly enhancing air connectivity between the two nations and opening new opportunities for regional travel and business.
With momentum building toward Visit Malaysia 2026, the mission places strategic focus on driving regional visitor numbers, enhancing air access, and facilitating mutually beneficial partnerships.
Key collaborative priorities focus on enhancing regional connectivity and promoting tourism growth. These include increasing the number of direct flights and expanding travel routes to improve accessibility. Efforts will also be directed toward creating dual-destination packages and regional travel circuits that encourage longer stays and broader exploration. Streamlining visa processes is another priority, aimed at making travel more convenient and attractive for international visitors. In addition, co-developing marketing campaigns will help raise global awareness and interest in the region. Finally, strengthening public-private alliances will be essential for aligning strategies, pooling resources, and ensuring long-term success.
Malaysia continues to captivate with its unique blend of modernity and traditions from vibrant megacities and rainforest retreats to UNESCO heritage towns and award-winning beaches. There is something for every kind of traveller including those seeking halal travel, family adventures, medical care, shopping experiences, or eco-tourism.
With an increasing number of Cambodian Muslims seeking travel that aligns with their faith and lifestyle, Malaysia’s globally recognised Muslim-friendly offerings position it as a natural, trusted choice. Tourism Sales Mission signals more than a marketing effort, it marks a new era of collaboration and a call to action for the Cambodian travel trade, media, and business community.
